LARP-Pilum for combat displays

Does anybody have eperience on making a pilum for show fighting purposes?<br>
Due to the fact that the exchange of missle weapons like this was more then common in ancient warfare, it should be possible to display this on show events. Of course no one should get hurt and a volley of pila should happen in a choreographed combat displays o that the other side know when to take up the shields or open formation.<br>
I think of realistic look-a-likes out of fibre glass as a core and rubber foam as a body. Painted it should like a real one from the audience distance. A problem is the pilum head itself, which could propably made out of cardboard, which bents harmlessly went hit.<br>
I know that the live action roleplay people use similar stuff but never use missles (even their shields are out of rubber like foam).<br>
So far my ideas, any help?<br>

During our displays we throw dummy javelins without heads as we begin our rolling open order charge. However, in these cases there is no opposing force and (as in the majority of our display) the public are told that they are watching a unit training rather than fighting. This does not seem to disappoint anyone and gives us an opportunity to tell the public that like any army, the Roman army spent much more time training than fighting (obvious really but it is amazing how many people think that a soldier spends every waking hour of every day fighting for his life and do not realise that most modern soldiers probably do more ironing than fighting).<br>

We made also training diplays with our fellow roman groups, especially with cavary.<br>
For sure was roman army life a boring as for any other regular army at any times most times.<br>

It is not that we want to fufill spectors dreams of blood and gore but recreate the use of the germanic wall in Kalkriese. It will be more of a experiment to get a slight idea of what might happend there. For this we need at least some of the realistic factors (in this case in what formation was ist possible to produce a pila salvo). Of course we need some eyecandy too.<br>
