Cicero\'s decapitation

Ahhhh, now I see the video icon....still can't view it though. :-(
Visne partem mei capere? Comminus agamus! * Me semper rogo, Quid faceret Iulius Caesar? * Confidence is a good thing! Overconfidence is too much of a good thing.

There was a show on the history channel demonstrating the cutting power of a pompeii gladius using a goat's neck. Went right through it. I have no doubt that a gladius could cleave a human neck.

"I don't believe he was beheaded in the forum , nor the people around him soldiers.
They would have done their job and defended him if they were. As I recalled, he was in his litter being taken to safety. Not everyone was a soldier."

Nowhere did I suggest that this action took place in the forum. I know that perfectly well! As I said, the reason for beheading him was to use his severed head to prove to those in Rome that he was dead. It is well known that at about the time that the proscription lists were published he left Rome to stay at his villa.
Having read the full text of the passage I agree that the people covering their faces were Cicero's slaves not Herrenius' soldiers.

Although I did study this at university, that was a long time ago now and unfortunately I do not presently have access to my copy of Livy so did not check to see the context of the quote as I often do.

"I think seeing the treated wounded and injured are a different thing to seeing someone living and whole having their head hacked off, or sawn off, as the case may be.
I know I found it traumatic, yet I have also seen severely injured people, disabled for life by their injuries as well.
"

This could have led to an involved and interesting discussion but for legal reasons I am unable to give you the reply which is really required here. Sorry.
