There needs to be some caution about conflating hairstyles, clothing and nationality. I have the distinct memory of one Late Roman writer expressing disgust at some Roman young men wearing Hunnic hairstyles. Also clothing styles can become fixed in military settings. For example if every hussar in Europe wearing a pelisse and kolpack in the period 1780 to 1880 was Hungarian there would have been no young men left in Hungary!
