map of all Roman army museums & sites
#16
I put both those in: should you recall the others I will add them too. I'll bet they aren't in many tour guides.

Thanks. Part of the problem in finding them is that Google Maps does not always recognize the museum's name in its native language, and sometimes it does. And why the word "museum' brings up a lot of hotels is beyond me.

Hi
I'd like to put the following sites on the map_
(predominantly if not exclusively dedicated to Roman Times)
The Limes Museum , Aalen
http://www.limesmuseum.de/limesmuseum.52501.52497.htm
Limesmuseum Aalen, St.-Johann-Straße 5 , (D-) 73430 Aalen (Inside the remains of a Roman Ala Camp)
Tel: 0049(0)7361 528287-0
Fax: 0049(0)7361 528287-10
E-Mail: [email protected]

The Limes Museum, Osterburken
http://www.roemermuseum-osterburken.de/i...&FS=normal
Zweigmuseum des Archäologischen Landesmuseums Baden-Württemberg
Römerstraße 4 , (D-)74706 Osterburken
Tel. 0049(0)6291-415266
Fax.0049(0)3212-1048279
(Not far away from the remains of an Antonine auxiliary double camp.
Also sporting a site of a roman watchtower along the limes Limespark)
http://www.limespark-osterburken.de/inde...&C=0%22%3E

The Lobdengau-Museum, Ladenburg
http://www.lobdengau-museum.de/
http://www.lobdengau-museum.de/preise.htm
Amtshof 1, (d-)68526 Ladenburg
http://www.lobdengau-museum.de/anfahrt.htm
Don't be fooled by the modest appearance -- small IS beautiful in that case.
The Museum is sited just inside the riverside ( well , in Roman Times, that is!)
of the Roman City of the 3rd century AD. An ex-episcopal Palace.
Just a stones' throw ouside of a Roman auxiliary camp ( or rather TWO of them)
from the 1st & 2nd century AD and a Valentinian burgus from the 3rd third or the 4th century AD.

Römerkastell Saalburg
http://www.saalburgmuseum.de/
http://www.saalburgmuseum.de/english/sb_en_home.html
ARCHÄOLOGISCHER PARK
Saalburg 1 , D-61350 Bad Homburg v.d.H.
TEL +49 (0) 6175 / 9374-0
FAX +49 (0) 6175 / 9374-11
[email protected]
Inside a Roman auxiliary camp but outside of any modern Settlement,
this was the first Roman camp of its size in Germany ( including the accompanying vicus)
that has been (nearly) completely excavated and repeatedly restored.
Mainstay of the Deutsche Limes Kommission with the Saalburg Institute.
http://www.saalburgmuseum.de/institut/institut.html
And ist got a Facebook Account!
https://www.facebook.com/pages/R%C3%B6me...8515025349
....and, of course it has got a LIZ (Limesinformationszentrum) -- just like Aalen.

Ranking of these sites is, however accidentally and by no means intended to prejudice you.

Hope this helps

Done, I have also included your comments. If folks here can take a look at the museums near them and give a short description of what they find to be the highlights, I'd like to add those comments too.

That bit about the Yorkshire museum showing up in Germany seems to be Google's attempt at auto categorizing by location, which isn't working. It looks like I will have to manually create the map layers.

If you happen to have visited these museums and can remember, I'd like to add commentary to specific items like helmets that are on display in the collection.

It occurs to me that it will benefit everyone if we can place artifacts in specific museums so that it is easier for researchers to find them.

For example, where are all the existing Gallic A helmets located?

Great idea.
On top of my head, I can think of the Pydna battle scene relief at the Delphi sanctuary Museum.
Then there is that almost intact Aspis at the Vatican museum.
I'll try to think of more.

Probably a bit more do-able: shields are very small in number, and I was wondering where all the big parts are.

Yale has the Dura Europos shields, but in which museums are:

the Fayum shield?
the Doncaster shield?

And any other big bits I'm missing.

The metal parts of the Doncaster Shield (also known as the Danum Shield), along with a reproduction of the shield as a whole, are on display in the Doncaster Museum and Art Gallery.

Thanks to several people who said the Fayum shield is in the Cairo Police museum, which is a museum within the Citadel of Salah El Din.

I have a new approach to ask, sort of the reverse. Can you list what are considered the most important artifacts of their type, like the Fayum shield or Favonius tombstone, regardless if you have visited the museum or even know where the artifact is?
