I am preparing a trip, in the summer of 2012, along the Danube. The general idea is to start in Vienna and continue downstream. Of course, I want so see about every limes fort and every museum with a Roman collection, but I have no idea what is possible. I am now thinking of visiting: - Carnuntum
- Budapest (museum; Acquincum)
- Belgrad (museum)
- Viminacium, Romuliana
- Iron Gate; Trajan's Bridge
- Ulpia Sarmizegetusa, Sarmizegetusa
- Bucarest (museum)
- Dinogetia, Halmyris, delta of the Danube
- Histria, Trajan's Trophee
That means leaving out Oescus, which looks impressive. What do you think? What are the absolute must-sees? What is overestimated?

Hi Jona,
I have recently been to Budapest and the Aquincum Museum and the Hungarian National Museum (archaeological part) are certainly very interesting. Unfortunately I could not see the whole Aquincum Museum, because part of the exposition is closed during winter months. The part I could visit seemed quite short, but despite this very interesting. Some day I must return to Budapest to see the rest of Aquincum Museum.
One a little bit negative experience is from the Hungarian National Museum (btw. there are wonderful examples of late Roman helmets there, among other items of interest). I paid more money for the permission to take photos than for the entrance ticket itself. But in the archaeological section the rooms are so dark, that it is hard to take good pictures. At the same time it is difficult to use flash, because the glass showcases reflect the light and spoil the picture. I admit that it is also partially my fault, because I'm not good in taking photos and do not know all the tricks how to use the camera in dark environments. Nevertheless I was a little bit disappointed by this.
Carnuntum is certainly a must see! I'm sure you will enjoy it.
I cannot provide any information about the other museums (I have never been there).
However, if you would have some spare time when in Vienna, may be you may like to make a trip to Mikulov (Czech Republic). It is around 1 hour by car from Vienna. In the Regional museum ( http://www.rmm.cz/english/expozice_rmm.html) there is a small exposition with finds from Roman fortified site Musov Burgstall and also from German archaeological sites. The museum is small, but interesting.
Greetings
Alexandr

Thanks - I knew about the excavation but did not know the place where I could find them. That will indeed be interesting!!

Hi Jona, could you shoot some pics of
*the organ in the Aquincum museum
*the wooden model of Trajan's Bridge in the local museum
Serbian archaeologist plan to project the Trajan's Bridge across the Danube in a light show. Should be pretty spectacular, but the date hasn't been fixed yet, I believe.

Yes, the organ - I am looking forward to see it. The copy in Mainz is, after all, just a copy. And the bridge, well, since I've read about it for the very first time, I want to go there. I don't know why it's so romantic.

Hello Mike Boyd,
Thanks for posting the pics of the Aquincum Museum. Now we know why the Roman Empire fell! They wore their spatha without a scabbard, whacking off their legs and bleeding to death.
Nothing like a little historical accuracy.;-)
About as close to Aquincum I'll get is my helmet, which is as heavy as wagon-load of anvils. In my dreams, I thought of putting my Old Town canoe in at Vienna and paddling down to wherever Durostorm was. Pay tribute to Aetius, who was born there. The river is full of pike down there, so watch where you wade and don't carry baby ducks.

Hello Mike,
Thanks for the compliment!
I'm sure you know what I really meant. It's becoming more and more dangerous for American tourists-researchers in more countries than I want to think about. I usually wear all black, kinda like a Russian Italian. (smily-face here)

Both Archaeologial Museums are closed due to reconstruction (National and Belgrade city museums). You can visit military museum.
http://www.muzej.mod.gov.rs/museum/colle...ology.html
www.viminacium.org.rs for Viminacium site. Also Pozharevac museum for some material from Viminacium.
Romuliana is some 12 km from Zajecar. You should visit both, site and Zajecar museum.
Also You should visit museum in Kladovo.
Americans should not worry. Thousands of American tourists visit Belgrade for example every day...
