Suitability of the Newstead Lorica Segmentata?
#1
Salvate Omnes!

If I remember correctly, the Newstead type Lorica Segmentata is dated to the end of the second century till the early part of the third century. My question is: is there a Lorica Segmentata which would be a suitable companion for two helmets; Niederbieber style and the Imperial gallic H type helmet. Gallic H type helmet is usually dated to the end of the first century (?) and the Niederbieber style helmet from the middle of the second century to the early third century (?). Is it stretching too far to have a Lorica Segmentata which would be suitable for both helmets? I'm afraid there is too much gap between those two :? ...

I am pretty sure that the earliest evidence for the Newstead type dates to some time in the AD130s and it continues into the early third century AD (I am sure Mike Bishop will correct me if I am mistaken in this), which would certainly mean it would be contemporary with the 'Niederbieber' style of helmet. Imperial Gallic type G/H is datable to AD60 or earlier on the basis of the helmet parts from Colchester Sheepen associated with the Iceni revolt. It would almost certainly have been used after this, but associating it with Newstead segmentata might be going a bit far. Of course, it it were to be modified with retro-fitted cross bracing and perhaps a replaced cheek guard and aged a bit it might work.

Thanks Paul, I thought so too, stretching things a bit too far...

Btw, would a Niederbieber (or Niedermörmter) helmet, Newstead segmentata and a ring pommel sword represent fairly accurately a legionary of the time of Marcus Aurelius and marcomannic wars?

Where are you able to get a Newstead? Impirium has them on their site, along with the Kalkriese, but I cannot get an answer to any e-mails sent. I get the idea they are no longer in business.

You might consider the Italic G (Theilenhofen)as a good match.

Well the Spanish evidence (and the first Carlisle backplate) suggest it (and the Corbridge type, in the case of León) goes on into the 4th century, whilst the Millennium site finds from Carlisle certainly suggest Hadrianic deposition (and by inference earlier service) for the Newstead type.

Imperium is still in business as far as i am aware of. I know the owners and strikes me as strange that Lorie isn't answering emails. Either way I know that in the past there were some issues with the Newstteads that Imperium was getting, the hooks were not fitting onto the shoulder guard sections correctly, and it actually required some doing to the sides put together, and then once they were together it was next to impossible to seperate them. I know they were working with DSC to get the problem fixed but I'm not sure whatever happened with that.

Just an FYI, you might be able to get the Newstead from DSC directly.

Hi guys!

I am not planning to get a Lorica Segmentata or ring pommel sword any time soon, I was just speculating because I have Niederbieber and gallic H helmets. In fact I am interested in contsructing a legionary from the times of Marcus Aurelius and the marcomannic wars...
