Hi All.....does anyone make the Carry Sling and hardware to hold it onto the Scutum? Thanks, Mike
Also, how long should the sling be?

It's really just a strip of leather and 2 rings:

I usually just use 2 of the rivets that hold the boss to secure the rings. But you can just tie it to the ends of the grip with cord or thong.

The strap will be between 3 and 4 feet long, depending on your shield and your body. You want it to hang high enough that your legs don't bang into it when you walk, is all. Hold it up behind your back and measure point to point with a piece of string.

Hey Mike, I used a couple of "U" hooks on the end of a thick strap. That way, you can very quickly detach the strap for combat, instead of trying to un-loop the shield over your shoulder...nearly impossible in a segmentata without help.

Hi Mike,

Try this one.
Attach a suspension ring about three quarters of the way up the shield at roughly the eleven oclock position seen from inside.(as reported on the Dura shield).

If you then attach a buckled strap through this and through the handle you get a comefy strap that makes the shield easy to put on by yourself, even wearing a helmet, sits right and with just a quick pull on the strap will instantly detach the shield from your body.

We have used this set up for years and with extended straps used it as a great carry aid during the Founders Day parade a couple of years ago (takes the weight off the hand but still looks like you are side carrying.)

Give it a try you might be surprised.

Hey Mike,

This is the system I used. Now, I don't have very big hands, so I just barely have enough room on the handle to squeeze my mit in there between the two strap hooks. If you rivet in two rings as suggested above, that would work even better, imo. It would also make it easier to unhook the shield off of a ring, than around the handle. Mine as it stands right now, makes for a very fast release should I need my shield for combat. With the rings, it would probably be a few seconds faster.

Great Job Matt....as I am putting the new boss on mine(right now it only has holes drilled in the four corners) I'm going to drill to more holes so I can secure loops(I don't know where I'm getting them right now) and then use your hook idea for the strap. Mike

I was thinking the same way, but I am going to attach a hook on the front of the belt ( on my chest (like the "horse fittings"on a balteus) for quick release as would be for milites to.

Ohhh...I see what you are saying Agrimensor...I think. Do you mean that hook and release that is often used on gladius baldrics?. I don't see why you couldn't, though the ring and hook method should be fine on it's own.

I made a fairly simple buckle for my shield strap, in case it snags on the armor and won't slip off easily. It's bent and shaped rod, with the ends neatly flaired and drilled for the pin. There are quite a few like that in the Vindonissa catalog. Not sure I'd trust hooks to stay put, but buckles are certainly common finds.

Thanks for clarifiing this. The reason I actually put it this time, is as Jos is part of my group hahah So, I think he knows my point of view. But always good to tell it for other people reading with us, indeed.
