I think that is far from proven. Actually Baatz dismissed it in an article, see <!-- l <a class="postlink-local" href="http://www.romanarmytalk.com/rat/viewtopic.php?p=116096#p116096">viewtopic.php?p=116096#p116096<!-- l and my posts downwards in that thread.

Agreed, it does look very suspect, particularly when there are no other concrete examples. But there were a number of belt fittings from Dura that featured loops for hanging, 4thC style. For dagger? Or pouches?

Often they get confused with cavalry fittings. And poor old Terentius is is a little older than AD 260 Smile

I think we can assume bags for money, even small change, would be hidden under or secured by clothing. So around the waist under the tunic, around the neck under the tunic, or in waist band.

Some re-enactors often look like Christmas trees with bags and pouches hanging off them in profusion.

Salve Andy,

I'm the one that Byron was talking about who has been lots of leather work.. i am getting better... haha, still lots of room for improvement, but i have helped one of the girls in our group doing a loculus, and i done dozens of little leather pouchs, I would be more than happy to give you a hand in person and also give you access to my tools for any projects you want to do.

Drop me a PM and we can sort something out!

Welcome to the Forums! Smile

Kevin (Lucius)

Also check out link from old RAT for a picture of my latest loculus attempt Smile

Hi Andy,

sorry, I overlooked your posting:

Quote:Some of the links in the pocket guide don't work. I was interested to see "Notebook Bag thread".

That seems to be because of the update of the forum, the old URLs are not converted correctly when clicking an old style link. Anyway, I fixed the links, should all work again now.

Quote:Was there any evidence to suggest that there would have been Belt Pouches used by the Romans other than the simple circular drawstring pouch?

As I said above, none that I find convincing.

It has a page devoted to leatherwork in general. Have fun!

Matthew,

Cheers

Just get yourself a copy of the article "New Light on Old Tents" by Carol van Driel-Murray, in Volume 1 of the Journal of Roman Military Equipment Studies ([url:z7a8p626]http://www.jrmes.org[/url])
