Roman Leatherwork - Pandabean - 09-22-2010
Not sure if this is in the right spot.
I have been doing leatherwork for a while and finally starting to improve
. I was wondering if there were any patterns/tutorials out there for Roman Leather items such as the Loculus or Sacrina. May even be willing to give roman shoes a go.

Well there is the How-to's section in this forum, then there is the beginners section as well.
Where abouts are you then?
We have a small group based out at Archaolink as well. Several small scale events throughout the year.
also one of the guys in the group has taken to doing leather, and has just made a localus..he's improving with each attempt.

I'm amazed I've made so much stuff myself, since I started from scratch. My best bit of advice is to measure everything twice before you start cutting leather ... oh, and make mock ups out of thick card or paper first, use these to create your templates. This is invaluable for complex things like shoes.

Some of the links in the pocket guide don't work. I was interested to see "Notebook Bag thread".
Was there any evidence to suggest that there would have been Belt Pouches used by the Romans other than the simple circular drawstring pouch?

A little rectangular belt pouch can be seen on the Terentius Fresco from Dure Europus c.260AD.

Oh, hadn't heard of that one! For the Republic and early Empire, I don't think anyone has come up with ANY depictions of belt pouches at all, nor any references. There are a couple little pouches of various sorts, but no evidence that they were hung from the belt. Just wasn't a Roman fasion at that time, apparently! Toss it inside your tunic, or hand it to a slave.
Some kinds of shoes are a LOT easier to make than a satchel! A simple pair of carbatinae are open at the top and front, and just laced up, with the only stitching being up the back, so it's pretty easy to get them to fit well enough. But yes, play with PATTERNS first.

Or tuck it into a ventralis! You could argue that the square shaped object which appears to be tucked into the waist-belt on early Rhineland sculptures is a purse of some kind. Off hand I think there is also a literary source to keeping valuables in the waist-band but I do not think the text is clear if they are just wrapped up in the fabric or kept in a separate purse tucked into the waist-band.
I illustrated one of the Dura characters in Roman Military Clothing 2 with a purse attached to the belt itself but obscured most of it because the source is vague as to the pouch and method of attachment.

There are earlier sculptures with what is thought to be a wax tablet in th belt. but was there not speculation it could also be a small pouch or something?
