Some lames have reportedly been found that were 20 or 22 ga.

http://www.larp.com/legioxx/lorica.html If you're going to use one thickness, 18 gauge is a decent average. You can use 16 on the shoulders if you go with 20 ga on the girdle sections. But there was some variation! Happy armoring! Matthew
