Recreation of Roman ship from Mainz Museum
#1
I have a series of photos from the Mainz museum, which include a lot of views of full scale model of a small warship.
Would this be worth the bandwidth for me to put up the photos?

For background on the Mainz ships and the two reconstructions, see: http://www2.rgzm.de/navis/Musea/Mainz/NavismusEngl.htm

This is also a good site for all known Roman (and other times) wrecks in Europe

I wouldn't mind seeing some photos of that ship. I'm still thinking of a hand made model (hopefully that will actually float), maybe three feet long or so. Now there's a rainy day project, eh? Any of the photos have a scale that could be used for measuring things?

There is a commercial model, plastic, but it doesn't seem to be quite right in most respects, judging only by the other pictures I've seen of similar craft. If I'm going to go to all the trouble, I guess I might as well try to get it right....

I suggest you try the Mainz website, as they have detailed drawing of the ships and info on the dimensions. There are also pictures of the inside of the vessel, which will be hard to shoot at the exhibition. That should give you plenty of info for a model.

Actually the ship I was talking about was the one with no decking, so the interior was easy enough to take pictures.

Ahh, I see you were allowed up REAL close. I didn't know that. I was in fact refering to both ships, as the site shows plans and pictures taken from inside both ships, a vantage point most vistors are unable to get to. Here's the link to their picturegallery : http://www2.rgzm.de/scripts/dbWeb/dbweb ... Nr/dat/101

It is a wonderful museum, Mainz has two 'must visit' museums for ancient historians and re-enactors, one for the ancient ships, and one for the Roman Central Museum. I try and visit them when I am in Germany, just to see what is new. But, I also know that many of our friends will not be able to make the trip. Hopefully the internet will allow everyone who wishes to view the beautiful recreations to have the opportunity! I know that making Mainz a part of any tour of Roman Europe is a great idea!
Here is a photo of the mastercraftsman working on a new model for display!

Ave to one and all,
I have heard from a author,(whose name naturally escapes me) that there is a German re-enactment group that has built a full size repro of one of the Mainz vessels and use it... with the financial backing of a local Beer Manufactory. He couldn't remember the name of the group, but it evidentally is out there some where. If anyone finds out the name of the group, please share it with us. Hope this helps some.

It's a navis lusoria, she is called the Regina after Castra Regina (Regensburg) where she was built. This PDF has pictures of both the wreck, the proces of reconstruction and the final product under sail. Enjoy!

Hi Larry,

Just search for 'Lusoria' on this forum and you will find what you need.
