Late Roman helmet from Krefeld
#1
I just found the photo below in my collection. "Krefeld" was the only note I made. But I have never been to Krefeld and must have made the photo at an exhibition. It suppose it is this helmet from our helmet database, which unfortunately has no photo. But at least, it matches the description. Can anyone confirm it?

If we look at this photoset from the Burch Linn museum, Krefeld, I think it indeed is the helmet in the helmet database, as it also seems to be the only helmet in the museum. (but I'm never been there so I don't know for sure)

According to the book "Die Franken Wegbereiter Europas" this helmet was found in the
grave of a noble warrior in Krefreld Gellep. Together with the helmet a coin was found, a
copy of a soildus of Anastasius I. (491-518).

It seems we're getting closer to solving this little mystery; thanks both.

There is much more to know.

Together with the helmet a sword was found, (ein Ringknaufschwert), the harness of horse decorated with gold, silver and almandinen (?) and a saddle again decorated with almandinen. And even a jug with the inspription
ARPVAR ERAT ELEX VNDIQUE PRE (Arpvar was lucky and everywhere in high estimate).
The owner Arpvar was a noble close to Chlodwig, founder of the frankish empire.

That's indeed interesting. Thanks.

It´s just a garnett, usually enclosed in gold:

Ok first at all you must go to Krefeld!
The biggest roman Graveyard which is researched in Germany!
Reenactors from roman to migration period would find anything they wish there!
:!: :!: :!: :!:

The Helmet is from a Frankish noble, here is a Link for which displays the wallpapers from the museum and the other stuff out of the grave:
