Coin with helmeted head
#1
It says "Roman Republic Silver Denarius, M. Caecilius Metellus, After 211 A.D." but I assume they mean BC? In any case, I thought the helmet was neat.<br>

Hi,

I'm (very) fond of coins.. so I found this one thread of 2004..

Yes, a beautiful piece and indeed Metellus. The helmet is very characteristic for this coiner and this type. Otherwise, one would (certainly) require a picture of the reverse. Your reference and a more precise date,

Ref Caecilia 29 denarius
M. Caecilius Q.f. Q.n. Metellus Denarius. 127 BC. Helmeted head of Roma right, ROMA behind, star below chin / M•METELLVS•Q•F•, legend around Macedonian shield on which there is an elephant's head, all within laurel wreath. Cr263/1a; Syd 480.

I have one very similar from 133b.c. Mine has a chariot on the reverse.

could be wrong but it looks like a really fancy Attic-style helm.
If you were wondering about getting 211 AD and BC switched up, i think they did.
Lucius Caecilius Metellus was a consul in 251 BC, and died in 211 BC.

EDIT:
however, the surname which starts with an "m" is puzzling. THe only one I could find with a surname with an m was Marcus Caecilius Metellus, who was consul in 115 BC.
-thanks for reading.
