Event in Michigan set for spring 2010
#16
Alright thanks for the warning, I am planning on attending, I know Sean and Derek from Windsor were talking about it and I was planning on being there. Ill talk to the property managers and figure out when in May we can use the site, it shouldnt be a problem to change, the site is an auxillary grass parking lot for the main estate, it is only used for extremely large events and most of those dont start till July so we should be able to find a weekend that won't take people away from your event.

How early will your timeline go? Id be interested in bringing my Greek kit up if you wanted it. Right now its just me, but who knows, by then i might have a comerade or two.

If not, im thinking about working on a Roman kit, but I doubt it would be done in time... Gotta get my Greek stuff done up so im happy with it before I tackle any other times

Hi,
I want to echo the last. Our Greek group--Taxeis Plataea--would be interested in coming. We have a camp and we'll have both male and female, military and non-military impressions. I'd guess about twenty.
Worth saying that the reason I have to guess is that we're re-kitting from a fairly large Rev War group and we have quite few members. We're preparing for Marathon in 2011 and looking for venues to practice!
And if 490BC is just too early, I understand completely.

Christian- I think its amazing that youve got that big of a group coming out of the gate. Ive been trying to do some recruiting round here and its not going all that well, unfortunately. Most folks- even seasoned reenactors from other more modern periods (CW-WWII) tend to balk at the work and research that has to be done for Greek (or any ancient time, for that matter)

I think its best when youve got a group of folks from a different era move into another. It gives a good base to grow on. I know a few years back when my CW group moved to WWII we had the same thing- a base of 15-20 guys who already knew each other so we could be anal retentive togeather

Id really look forward to meeting some of you up there if we were able to come.

It was suggested that wagons or carts would be a nice thing to have. Maybe you could have a march for the reenactors to do. I plan to have a campain event in Texas in May 2010 as well. We would be doing a 10 mile march. It would be from camp into the town of Anderson, Tx and back. We would have a marching camp on the site. I plan to have one or two wagons pulled by mules or horses to carry some of the tents and stuff for camp. I would like us to tear down the tents and then put them back up when we return. We would invite anyone that wants to bring Horses to do Cav as well. The site we are going to be using is over 100 acres of wooded land with two big open fields. There is a musuem and recreated WW2 barracks on the site as well. The site has water and a mess hall. Although we would be cooking in camp. There are showers in the Barracks too. The museum and Barracks are near the road so there would be a little bit of a walk to get to them. The site was made/bought just for reenactments. I hope your event works out well.

I would love to have a large greek participation, there is a large greek and middle eastern population near the site so you guys may help draw them in and the more the merrier.

As for the idea of mules and horse, that sound like and awesome idea, we may be able to negotiate with the Grosse Pointe Hunt Club, which is about 10 minutes from the site and we may be able to negotiate with them to use their stables and paddocks, this I imagine would help out any of you horse owners.

Yes the event site is in Grosse Pointe Shores, MI, it is a suburb of Detroit and is about 35 minutes from the city itself.

The website is still under construction, it should be up in before the end of the month, when it launches it will have a section to sign up if you are considering coming, in the summer we will post a "handbook" and it will have the necessary forms that you will need to mail to me to formally register.

Lads this is technically an invite only event, but we have very loose guidelines as to what qualifies you for invite, please once the site is up register and post a few pics of your camp and we will send you a formal invitation. We are only using an invitation process because we want the best, this is event will be the first of its kind in the area and we want to make a good impression so that they will have us back. If you do not have pics of your camp that is fine, post a description of your kit and your group and we will invite you.

We are not sure about insurance yet, we are still working with the city and property owners to iron out permits and that kind of thing, ill keep you posted.

If you guys have any units from any time periods that you think may like to attend or know want to attend give me their emails, and ill give them the info.

Whatever time period range you pick, it would be really good to put similar eras together, and if possible, out of sight of the others. You don't really want to look across a Roman camp and see Conquistadors and Teutonic Knights walking around, or vice versa. Better to have some kind of visual barrier, even if it's a temporary wood fence or something.

Just my view, odds are we won't be able to get that far north to attend, so put that in the "small vote" category.
