Roman credit crunch
#1
...and what have the Romans ever done for us?

For whatever it's worth...

I am putting this in Off Topic since... Oh never mind...

Interesting article.

He claims that the dictatorship of Sulla is not related to the Roman credit crisis, but I wonder if the two are not somehow related, if one prepared the ground for the other to take root, so to speak.

I also wonder what Neil Faulkner's take on this would be -- this seems to be perfect for the Marxist school of Ancient History. Perhaps he will chime in at some point in some venue. :?

Thanks for posting the article Ralph, though I think it may actually be more on topic than you think.

And so...just like the Great Depression of the 20s and 30s, then? WW2 ended that one.

Scary thought, GJC. Quite possibly true, but scary just the same, eh?

How do you say "bailout" in Latin? That's probably what happened.

Well, the roman rulers (legitimate or not, depending of your side) had a looong tradition in "sheated" money when there wasn´t enough silver/gold to pay soldiers.

Caesar made great efforts to solve the debt problems of the Republic.
