Roman credit crunch - Gaius Decius Aquilius - 11-30-2008 ...and what have the Romans ever done for us? http://www.guardian.co.uk/business/2008 ... ic-lecture For whatever it's worth... I am putting this in Off Topic since... Oh never mind... Ralph I. Re: Roman credit crunch - Narukami - 11-30-2008 Interesting article. He claims that the dictatorship of Sulla is not related to the Roman credit crisis, but I wonder if the two are not somehow related, if one prepared the ground for the other to take root, so to speak. I also wonder what Neil Faulkner's take on this would be -- this seems to be perfect for the Marxist school of Ancient History. Perhaps he will chime in at some point in some venue. :? Thanks for posting the article Ralph, though I think it may actually be more on topic than you think. Narukami Re: Roman credit crunch - Fennia - 11-30-2008 Interesting article, but this gives hope, if the Romans could survive a credit crunch then we can too survive Re: Roman credit crunch - Gaius Julius Caesar - 11-30-2008 It says we do not know how they got out of the credit crunch..... hock: The invaded and conquered their way out of it...or am I missing something! Re: Roman credit crunch - M. Demetrius - 11-30-2008 And so...just like the Great Depression of the 20s and 30s, then? WW2 ended that one. Scary thought, GJC. Quite possibly true, but scary just the same, eh? Re: Roman credit crunch - Gaius Julius Caesar - 11-30-2008 Yes indeed! Re: Roman credit crunch - john m roberts - 12-01-2008 How do you say "bailout" in Latin? That's probably what happened. Re: Roman credit crunch - M. Demetrius - 12-01-2008 Bogus? Just a guess. Re: Roman credit crunch - Iagoba - 12-03-2008 Well, the roman rulers (legitimate or not, depending of your side) had a looong tradition in "sheated" money when there wasn´t enough silver/gold to pay soldiers. Cheeky-moneys. Re: Roman credit crunch - Gaius Julius Caesar - 12-03-2008 Caesar made great efforts to solve the debt problems of the Republic. Re: Roman credit crunch - M. Demetrius - 12-04-2008 ...and spent quite a bit of his own money to try to fix things, if the reports are true.... Re: Roman credit crunch - Gaius Julius Caesar - 12-04-2008 So I keep reading anyway.... Re: Roman credit crunch - M. Demetrius - 12-04-2008 OTOH if you appropriate rival'sl property and sell it off, is it really your money? Re: Roman credit crunch - Carlton Bach - 12-05-2008 Quote:OTOH if you appropriate rival'sl property and sell it off, is it really your money? Are you going to tell him it isn't? Re: Roman credit crunch - M. Demetrius - 12-05-2008 Nope, not me. It's not always best to be right. |
