What to we know about the attic helmet?
#1
I finally got my hands on a copy of Robinson's "The Armour of Imperial Rome". Someone in Britian was selling a decent copy for, what I believe to be a decent price, about half of what this book frequently goes for. Anyways, paging through it, I see a picture of a visor from an attic helment. I had never seen this before. So apparently this type of helmet did exist. What do we know of the attic helmet's construction? Did Hollywood get it right, a metal visor mounted on a brown leather skull cap, or was the bowl of the attic helmet made from metal?

I'm not 100% sure, but i can remember that Robinson's Imperial Italic "A" is a kind of attic helmet. Its made of bronze.

The two Italic 'A's featured by Robinson are both embossed into this form, as is a helmet which Connolly illustrated in 'The Roman Army'. As far as I know the brow plate Robinson features under Officer's Helmets is unique and there are no clues to the form of the helmet itself. Looking at it, it also occurs to me that it may not even come from a helmet, as it is not hard to think of other roles for this obviously decorative piece of metal, although the shape and decoration do make the helmet a tempting possibility.
I think the "visor" in question is much more likely to have been fixed originally to an all metal cavalry helm, i'm sure i saw a similar example fixed on a cavalry helm in Leiden museum.
