Indispensable Ancient Civilian Booklist
#4
I'm away from my library at home, but there are a couple books I definitely want to add already:

The Ancient City: Life in Classical Athens and Rome; by Peter Connolly and Hazel Dodge; 256 pages, Oxford University Press, 2001. ISBN-10: 0195215826. Even though the first 40% or so is devoted to classical Athens, this book is an amazing visual resource on the city of Rome. Abundant pictures, cutaways, buildings exploded level by level cover temples, insulae, the Circus Maximus, and much more. I'd pay twice the asking price for this book. Working IX to V; by Vicki Leon; 336 pages, Walker & Co, 2007. ISBN-10: 0802715567. ISBN-13: 978-0802715562. This book discusses the work of everyday professions in Rome (and, to a lesser extent, Greece) in an easy-to-read style, loaded with "local color" and obscure facts. My only complaint is that none of the many interesting facts are specifically footnoted, but it does provide a bibliography and index. Fun and informative.
