Indispensable Ancient Civilian Booklist - Wander - 07-07-2008

The Indispensable Booklist in References & Reviews is great, but (being part of RAT) it focuses on Roman military topics. Do we have a similar list for non-military Roman topics here in Ancient Civ, or should we go ahead and post there?

Re: Indispensable Ancient Civilian Booklist - Carlton Bach - 07-08-2008

Putting together a list like that would be useful. I'rd suggest

Clothing:

A.T. Croom: Roman Clothing and Fashion (Tempus Publishing 2002)

A. Pekridou-Gorecki: Mode im antiken Griechenland (C.H.Beck Archäologische Bibliothek 1989)

M. Pausch: Die römische Tunika. Ein Beitrag zur Peregrinisierung der antiken Kleidung (Wißner Verlag 2003)

Living:

P. Connolly: Pompeii (Oxford University Press 1990)

H. Dodge / P. Connolly: The Ancient City (Oxford University Press 1999 (?))

C. Kunst: Leben und Wohnen in der römischen Stadt, WGB Darmstadt 2008)

C. Kunst: Römische Wohn- und Lebenswelten. Quellen zur Geschichte der römischen Stadt (WGB Darmstadt 2000)

W. Szaivert / R. Wolters: Löhne Preise Werte. Quellen zur römischen Geldwirtschaft (WGB Darmstadt 2005)

gotta stop for now, but these are good, I recommend them.

Indispensable Ancient Civilian Booklist (Updated 15 Oct 08) - Restitvtvs - 07-08-2008

Thanks to Jasper for making this sticky & to Wander for asking for this (perpetual work in progress). No further updates planned. Perhaps the webmaster could turn this list over to someone well suited to continue? Thanks again to everyone who contributed book titles.+r Smile

Re: Indispensable Ancient Civilian Booklist - Wander - 07-08-2008

I'm away from my library at home, but there are a couple books I definitely want to add already:

The Ancient City: Life in Classical Athens and Rome; by Peter Connolly and Hazel Dodge; 256 pages, Oxford University Press, 2001. ISBN-10: 0195215826. Even though the first 40% or so is devoted to classical Athens, this book is an amazing visual resource on the city of Rome. Abundant pictures, cutaways, buildings exploded level by level cover temples, insulae, the Circus Maximus, and much more. I'd pay twice the asking price for this book. Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/Ancient-City-Life ... 383&sr=1-3

Working IX to V; by Vicki Leon; 336 pages, Walker & Co, 2007. ISBN-10: 0802715567. ISBN-13: 978-0802715562. This book discusses the work of everyday professions in Rome (and, to a lesser extent, Greece) in an easy-to-read style, loaded with "local color" and obscure facts. My only complaint is that none of the many interesting facts are specifically footnoted, but it does provide a bibliography and index. Fun and informative. lots and lots - richsc - 07-12-2008

Maybe my idea of 'indespensible' is different, but the Roman world is so vast. These are some of my favorites from my bookshelves, but there are a lot more:

"The Bankers of Puteoli" by David Jones
"Banking and Business in the Roman World" by Andreau
"Trade in Classical Antiquity: by Morley
"Cooking Apicius" by Sally Grainger
"A History of Private Life", Aries and Duby, Editors
"Roman Hospitality" by John De Felice
"The Jewellery of Roman Britain" by Catherine Johns
"The Artifice of Beauty" by Sally Pointer
"Numbering and Measuring in the Classical World" , W F Richardson (absolutely indispensible tretise on Roman concepts of mathmatics)
"Handspindles" Bette Hochberg
"The Warp Weighted Loom" by Marta Hoffman

very well structured, too.

Re: Indispensable Ancient Civilian Booklist - Sean Manning - 07-19-2008

Lionel Casson, Travel in the Ancient World (1994) has a great deal of information about what travel was like for a Greek or Roman, where they might go, and why. Thankfully, the Bronze Age and Early Iron Age get their fair share of attention too, and it continues into Late Antiquity (lots of Christian sources there!).

Lionel Casson, Ships and Seamanship in the Ancient World (2nd edition c. 1995) is the standard reference on that topic. Its huge, packed with footnotes, and very readable.

Re: Indispensable Ancient Civilian Booklist - Epictetus - 09-08-2008

Very nice! I would also recommend Jerome Carcopino’s Daily Life in Ancient Rome. The book is quite dated (published in 1940), but still one of the best general descriptions of normal life.

The table of contents:
1) The extent and population of the city
2) Houses and streets
3) Society and social classes
4) Marriage, woman, and the family
5) Education and religion
6) The morning
7) Occupations
8 ) Shows and spectacles
9) Afternoon and evening

This is what Mary Beard had to say about him:
Quote:Carcopino’s pledge to his readers was to open up to them some traces of the world that lay underneath the veneer of grandeur that remains the public face of ancient Rome; to put before our eyes the scoundrels in the street-corner bar, the cooks in the kitchen, the man who stoked the boilers in the baths. No one has ever done it better.

Good quality images of ancient manuscripts from across the Roman Empire, Late Roman through Early "Byzantine":

Includes calligraphy and illuminations.

The actual illuminations are relatively small, so I wouldn't expect much or accurate detail of the clothing features, etc.

Re: Indispensable Ancient Civilian Booklist - Lucius Rabirius - 02-25-2009

For my opinion some important books about ancient clothing are missing:

- Margarete Bieber, Enwicklungsgeschichte der griechischen Tracht (Berlin 1967).
- Margarete Bieber, Griechische Kleidung (Berlin 1928).
- Hans Rupprecht Goette, Studien zu römischen Togadarstellungen (Mainz 1989).

Maybe you can integrate in the list. Thanks in advance.

Salve, Lucius. Integrated. Thank you! Pax tecvm, +r Smile

ALL: I may finally have some more free time again, to resume building this booklist. I plan to go to through RAT posts during past five months, to get books from others' posts, as well as resume surfing the web for book reviews, bibliographies, etc.

Thank you again to everyone who has shared book citations. Best regards, +r
