Sightseeing in Great Britain
#1
Hi there,

I am going on a trip to GB for about 3 weeks. Where should I go to? What should I not miss? Are there any remarkable roman events between 12th and 27th of July? Best Museums and Ruins?

British Museum and Vindolanda of course... but what else?

Thanks a lot!!!

I'm not native, but you must take at least one day for the British Museum. The Elgin Marbles, the sculptures of the Mausoleum in Halicarnassus, the coin collection, the Oriental department - a man (or woman) needs an entire life to see everything and appreciate it. (Please note that the best parts of the Babylonian collection are now in Berlin.)

The Victorian and Albert Museum, also in London, has a cast of the column of Trajan.

Colchester Castle: on the site of the ancient temple for Claudius, nice collection.

The Ashmolean in Oxford: my favorite museum and my favorite city. If you're there, don't forget the Pitt Rivers Museum - that's anthropology, but wow, it's a very nice place to be.

Saint Albans, ancient Verulamium.

Caerleon in Wales.

***

As you see, this is not very much, and nothing you could not have found in a travel guide. For the real do's and dont's, our friends from the isles must offer advice.

Probably have people pondering what to suggest....there is quite a lot really, apart from Vindolanda, there is Housteads, Chesters Fort, The Museum in Newcastle......etc etc
there are several places to see along Hadrians wall....
Down near London there is St Albans/Verulanum....
Colchester, Lunt Fort at Coventry....
To name just a few. sorry be so unhelpful

You'll be arriving in Britain during National Archaeology week, so there'll be lots of special events going on. Check out: http://www.nationalarchaeologyweek.org.uk/

Also, come to York (Eboracum) - we've got lots of lovely Roman stuff including:

Yorkshire Museum Roman Galleries
http://www.yorkshiremuseum.org.uk/Page/Index.aspx

Multangular Tower (in the Yorkshire Museum Gardens:
http://www.ukattraction.com/yorkshire/m ... -tower.htm

Roman Baths Museum
http://www.britainexpress.com/cities/yo ... hhouse.htm

Roman Headquarters remains (under that ruddy York Minster  )
http://www.britainexpress.com/cities/yo ... rcroft.htm

City Walls (some of which are Roman)
http://www.britainexpress.com/cities/york/wall.htm

There's also the reconstructed Roman fort out at Murton on the city outskirts which is worth a look, but a pain to get out to without a car:
http://www.murtonpark.co.uk/html/roman_fort.html

York is on the Main East Coast Train line http://www.nationalrail.co.uk/ a mere 2 hours from London.

If you're after early and Late Roman re-enacting, Leg II Augusta http://www.legiiavg.org.uk/index_files/Page1088.htm and Comitatus http://www.comitatus.net are at Ribchester in Lancashire, on the 12th and 13th July:
http://www.ribchestermuseum.org/

Must admit I'm also biased toward the Roman ruins of St Albans, Verulamium, as it's my home town: http://www.stalbansmuseums.org.uk/Sites ... ium-Museum plus the main part of St Albans Abbey is made of Roman tile from the ruins of the city. St Albans is very close to London, so an easy trip out.

Have fun Big Grin

If you are venturing into the frozen north, you really must visit The Trimontium Trust in Melrose, where you'll see an excellent selection of Roman military finds from the Newstead excavations.

I can see the British Museum has been mentioned but the Hadrian, Empire and Conflict exhibition starts there on 24th July
http://www.britishmuseum.org/whats_on/f ... drian.aspx

And if you're around Suffolk you could come on the Roman mosaic course I'm running on the 19th July!

Colchester Castle has been mentioned and that is a really good museum for Roman exhibits and it's easy to get to from London.
