Hi there,
I am going on a trip to GB for about 3 weeks. Where should I go to? What should I not miss? Are there any remarkable roman events between 12th and 27th of July? Best Museums and Ruins?
British Museum and Vindolanda of course... but what else?
Thanks a lot!!!
Well, you know, this small Island in the atlantic ocean... really no native insider hints? 8)
I'm not native, but you must take at least one day for the British Museum. The Elgin Marbles, the sculptures of the Mausoleum in Halicarnassus, the coin collection, the Oriental department - a man (or woman) needs an entire life to see everything and appreciate it. (Please note that the best parts of the Babylonian collection are now in Berlin.)
The Victorian and Albert Museum, also in London, has a cast of the column of Trajan.
Colchester Castle: on the site of the ancient temple for Claudius, nice collection.
The Ashmolean in Oxford: my favorite museum and my favorite city. If you're there, don't forget the Pitt Rivers Museum - that's anthropology, but wow, it's a very nice place to be.
Saint Albans, ancient Verulamium.
Caerleon in Wales.

As you see, this is not very much, and nothing you could not have found in a travel guide. For the real do's and dont's, our friends from the isles must offer advice.
Probably have people pondering what to suggest....there is quite a lot really, apart from Vindolanda, there is Housteads, Chesters Fort, The Museum in Newcastle......etc etc
there are several places to see along Hadrians wall....
Down near London there is St Albans/Verulanum....
Colchester, Lunt Fort at Coventry....
To name just a few. sorry be so unhelpful
If you are venturing into the frozen north, you really must visit
The Trimontium Trust in Melrose, where you'll see an excellent selection of Roman military finds from the Newstead excavations.
Wow, that´s a lot of stuff!
Thanks for your help, I think I will enjoy the trip!
Couple of more places to see.
Portchester Castle near Portsmout(Some great Roman walls)
The Museum of London. Got some great Roman artifacts there.
Enjoy your trip and have a pint for me.

And if you're around Suffolk you could come on the Roman mosaic course I'm running on the 19th July!
Colchester Castle has been mentioned and that is a really good museum for Roman exhibits and it's easy to get to from London.

we are doing a Gladiator display at Lunt on the 12/13th I wont be there but the rest will, Lunt has a reconstructed gate house and a granary. You can see the remains of the rest of the fort too.
St Albans is also definatly worth a vist

I hope that the regular roman collection at the British Museum won´t be closed preparing the hadrian exhibition...
Thanks for the other hints!
Also greetings of wife and son! They want to know where the best beaches are...
At the channel the water is warmest because of the gulf stream I suppose..
