\"A War like no other\"; by Victor Davis Hanson
#64
We have an ability as students of history to see these parallels, but as such we should be even more wary of making judgements on what is "good" or "bad". Was it really worth the loss of life that occurred in both the American revolution and the war of 1812 when we would today simply be Canada? Is Canada so bad? In fact we would probably be one nation from Mexico north. Most Americans would still say yes. If in 100 years the secular democratic republic of Iraq is hosting the female president of Iran, then this generation will look like heroes. One man's historic hero, like Alexander or Ceasar, is another nation's mass murdering ethnic cleanser. Were I Keltic I may not like Ceasar all that much. Those of you who are Scotts or Irish may well be typing in your native tongue now- a Lingua Franca...er...Gallica.
