Lists of Reenactment Groups Useful?
#16
+1 MArcus

A list with an adress and mail/weblink to contact the troop, the country and geographical region of the group and perhaps a way to say if the troop recruits or seeks apointments or act in schools (and so on) would be great for beginners or isolated reenactors... Another interesting thing would be of course the background reenacted.
I guess we don't need too much more informations except also the last contact date.
Optionally, if you want we could also take advantage of the annuary to survey the situation of roman(/greek?) reenacting (number of reenactors, military, civilians, average age, countries, represented time...) something quite robust anyway.
Yeah, It would be great.

I guess this could be managed through a single thread that someone particular could modify or a classical website linked to RAT. Perhaps we could separate America and Europe for convenient reasons and order the list by alphabetical order or perhaps century ?

If you do agree I'm volunteer to participate but a small team would be the best solution.
Do we concretely consider the making of a team for an annuary ?

Bye

Quote:It would take considerable effort to maintain. There is a comprehensive one, on Reenactor dot net, I think, but there are several broken links there, you're right. How to fix it without excluding would be the hardest part, I guess. Any suggestions?
You can just type reenactor.Net as in www.reenactor.net :-Þ Seriously, we're about to update everything. Alas, we've been real busy converting to the portal... it's kind of a pain, but it will be much better in the end. AND will allow the links to be updated easier. If you have a link to be updated or a new one, please send the info (along with an actual description of your unit --don't make us guess) to kimnoyes AT gmail DOT com I only altered his e-mail this way because everyone fears the spam harvesters. :-0 Really though, after awhile, you just gotta stop worrying about spam YOU ARE GONNA GET IT.

Matt, I agree that Matthew Amt's list is very useful but more so for reenactors in the US than reenactors in Europe. There are a lot of European groups that are not on Matthew's website...

You know, by all means, send them in... none of us have the time anymore to just surf the web for hours... and that's what it will take. Often, real life intrudes in the fake life.

Agreed. Send them to Marsh and Matt and I'm sure they'll add the updates.

don't we already have the roman army map, that could provide all these info? every group could make an entry by itself, but not even all the groups that have "representatives" on RAT are in that list.

So how about a sticky with links to some of the groups lists?

Cuz we don't need it really? Anyone who comes here gets directed to the appropriate list/group email...sometimes an actual group member responds to the inquiry directly.

Perhaps RAT could lead the way by having the most up to date and accurate listing of clubs... such a list would be of great service to the Reenactment Community.

What is wrong with you radical citizens wanting to wear tunics under your Togas? We have always worn them with nothing underneath and see no reason to change! Smile wink:

So this debate is stalled with about half the respondents saying no and the other half saying yes.
Unfortunately, it appears some those posting on this thread seem to have a personal agenda. Personal agendas are good as they help you to focus, but here they seem to cloud the question.
I really don't care if RAT established a list or not, but as an organization which is respected by the Roman community, it seems logical that they should have a source listing for all known groups.

In France, for Medieval reenactors and crafters, a photographer (specialist of reenacting pictures) made his personnal website called webieval. Wonderful free site, very complete, almost a "must".

But few months ago, the webmaster came back arguing that maintaining the webieval cost too much in time and money and now each crafter or "club" which would stay on webieval had to pay about 10€/year and more for crafters I guess. Some reenactors proposed their help and some free solutions but he did not change his mind. Well the interest decreased really since then.

What I mean is that I prefer to see an up to date almost exhaustive list of roman era groups maintained by an enthusiast community than on a personnal website. The webmaster can suddenly die, lose his interest or something else... A community seems safer. Though only a few fools are courageous enough to make such a work, you have more chances to find such people among a community than in a lone being. All we need is a common frame to deposit our groups adresses on a space known by all. RAT has a good reputation. And each surviving group should signal they are still alive each year, nothing more.

Bye
