I have seen lists of reenactment groups on many different websites but often
they are not maintained well and information becomes outdated. It is hard
to keep up as new units are formed and other merge or are disbanded.
Would a list of contact information for reenactment groups maintained by RAT members and posted perhaps in a subforum be useful or would it also change too quickly and not be worth the considerable effort to maintain.
It would take considerable effort to maintain. There is a comprehensive one, on Reenactor dot net, I think, but there are several broken links there, you're right. How to fix it without excluding would be the hardest part, I guess. Any suggestions?
Avete!

Once in a while I have time to check links on my Legio XX Links page, but that will only tell you if a certain site is actually toast or not. Doesn't tell you a thing about the status of the group, really. Active groups can have dead websites, and an eternal website may be for a dead group. You can try emailing or otherwise contacting the unit to find out, but reenactors are notorious for not answering inquiries! Once in a great while I will actually hear from a group that they are no longer active, so I chop their entry. But in at least one case, I heard just afterwards that one member was going to try to keep the unit active after all!

If you can get me some reliable updates, I'll be happy to fix my Links page. BUT I can't guarantee that I'll get to it SOON...

Valete,

Matthew
And there are the sad cases of a very few individuals who have websites for groups that don't exist because the "leader" doesn't play well with others and new members leave for more friendly groups.
So what's your plan, John?

Matt, I wasn't casting anything negative your way, and I hope you didn't take it that way. You're not responsible for what happens in/to a group outside your own, and if they disband and don't tell you, how would you know? Honest, I wasn't implying that you were. Please resheath your (very excellently reworked, and modified to perfection, of course) gladius, before I get hurt.... :?

No, no, not at all! Just telling it like it is. To be honest, the Legio XX site has been surviving mostly on a diet of neglect these days. Actually added a couple links to my Hoplite site a few days ago, and I try to add new projects and toys to my Bronze Age site whenever I can (since that's my big passion these days), but just not keeping up much in the way of Roman updates. Sorry, world!

Valete,

Matthew

PS: My new Bronze Age Sardinian shield is coming along, and will be REALLY COOL when it's done!

I was hoping that there would be enough interest for a list as a sub-forum or sticky or something and that someone with a lot of time on their hands
would volunteer to the moderator/chief researcher for the list. It wouldn't be an easy job and probably a lot of "bad link" and "you didn't include my group" etc. I am not able to volunteer to moderate myself for personal reasons.

Matthew;
Your involvement in Roman Reenactment and the XX Legion website
is a great benefit to the hobby worldwide. When someone asks "How do I get started" the Handbook is the first place they get sent. So what if the latest gear and newest units don't get listed right away - It is still the best place to start by far for both the new recruit and the experienced reenactor.
We just started in the Ancient Combat Sports forum a thread about a listing of all gladiator schools. At least all RAT board members who are in a gladiator group could add to this thread. But this is not a subforum really. See here:

Maybe you could get it made into a sticky so it would always be easy to find.
Matt Amt already has a list...a little outdated sometimes, but more than enough to get people started. And if there is a broken link, I know myself I've let Matt know.
Right- no sense in reinventing the wheel. If you care to simply check all the links and add new ones that might be missing John, why not just work with Matt?
RAT would be the ideal site to list reenactment clubs.
It's respected, independent, extensively moderated and has international resources. RAT has the best potential to be the most up-to-date resource.

We have almost given up asking the myriad sites to update their "lists of clubs" . Some have information that is 5 or more years out of date: email contact, address, description of club purpose etc etc.

HUZZAHS to RAT if they add this service to their long list of resources!
If someone is willing to devote his or her time to it it would be a good idea. Might lessen the 'I'm looking for a Legion in ... area' questions.

But it will take quite some time and contribution. But I think the list would grow quickly. Not all groups are represented, but will probably be known by people that are here on RAT.

You could just start a thread, John. And if the list that is collected looks nice and usefull it can be decided to make it a 'sticky'.

Not really, most people have found Matt's site before or in conjunction while searching topics on the Roman Army. Plus, Matt Amt and his site are respected, independent, have no need to be moderated and also has international resources, and can be updated as necessary.

Which basically means we don't need to have a second site going with the same thing...plus it will just chew up more staff time.

Huzzah to Matt Amt for doing it in the first place. 8)
