The copper alloy horn stiffeners could be attached to the wooden frame to re-enforce the frame. Horns are put under immense pressure. When the leather saddle cover is removed, names sometimes punched on to the horn stiffeners would become visible. It would be easy to identify which saddle tree belonged to which horse or to which rider.
