Castra Romana-Pompeii II Cancelled
#1
The Roman Army Festival, Castra Romana Pompeii II is officially cancelled

The track now places the storm EYE on Georgetown, SC Saturday morning. The rain bands will cover most of North Carolina, and may include tropical storm force winds as far inland as Charlotte.

The decision was based on several criteria:

1. Travel dangers for the 30+ participants from Georgia, SC, Florida.
2. Traffic problems due to possible evacuations.
3. Tropical Storm Force winds in the Charlotte Area and associated safety concerns.
4. Heavy Rainfall causing the field to mud up and be destroyed by foot traffic.
5. Lack of public attendance due to Storm conditions Saturday morning.
6. Re-enactors canceling (21 already) due to weather

I stress that this decision is not made lightly. Many of us have a considerable time and financial investment in the event, and I must stress that the Museum gave me the final call. I do not want anyone of my family (you guys) hurt just to have an event. It is possible the storm will turn and the weather in Charlotte will be beautiful, but we still face the spectre of half the re-enactors having to travel thru the storm to arrive, and the other half driving thru it to get home.

Hotel reservations must be cancelled by 3pm of the day you were slated to arrive.

Gents who sent me their gear, I will ship it back next week, I am currently activated for Hanna and will not have time to get to it until we secure. It is safely stored.

We have discussed a possible reschedule later, but will decide at a future time. Just monitor the Yahoo Group.

Roman Days is September 24-26 at George Mason, lets try to Support them.

If you can drop us a prayer that the storm will stay mild, please do. My squad will be on James and Johns Island (Barrier Islands of Charelston).

My humblest apologies, it hurts, but we have to go with the track.

Rusty

PS: Unit Leaders, PLEASE help get the word out! I will post this on RAT and the Yahoo groups of the units coming, but I do not want to get a call Friday from someone who did not get the message. R

Pompeii D-30

Hello everyone,
this is just a reminder that we just about at the D-30 days before the
Pompeii event in Charlotte.

Looks to be a absolute great event.

This is generally the time before an event that I start to look at my
kit and work on it.

Its also about this time when I discover that something might need
replacing.

That said, one of my additional roles will again to be the custos
armorum, or unit armorer/supply/gear guy. I'll be the guy you will
want to track down to borrow kit, or to get outfitted in kit for the
event. Don't be shy, just come right up and ask/get a hold of me and
I'll take care of you.

The only thing that we ask is that you help us spray the kit down with
WD-40 when you are done using it.

We have about 16 complete kits of legionary and auxiliary gear so not
only can we take care of you, we can also outfit a friend.

I look forward to seeing everyone there.

Pompeii D-21 (or about)

Looks like we are about at the D-21 mark for the Pompeii Event.

Things are starting to shape up quite nicely, and numbers are looking
good as well. The more the better and it is not too late to say you
want to come.

If you are wanting to stay in a hotel, don't forget to make your
reservations, and for those that are flying in, the airport is only
about 5 miles from the event hotel HQ, with plenty of restaurants to
eat at for meals that are not being provided-in other words, spare
yourself the rental car and parking fees.

We will be doing a final leaders site recon later in the week. This
is mainly to make sure that we have a good 90% solution to the camp
layout and set up for the event.

Don't worry it will be easy to find us when you arrive. Look for a
big red trailer, and Vex or two on the site. We will also have cell
phones too, to help vector you in.

If you have not worn armor in a while, it might be a good time to work
on a few strengthening exercise so you don't feel it in the lower back
and shoulders.

Look forward to seeing all of you at the event.

Visited the site in Charlotte, and I will be adding photos to the website tonight. Beautiful grounds. We will have Charlotte PD onsite for security 24 hours a day Thursday to Monday. No fires as originally planned.

I need to try to get a count on the number of CARS and TRAILERS coming to arrange parking. We have 25 spaces in the garage across the street, offsite parking for trailers, as well as Parking at the Hotel for those with rooms. Let me know how and who you are coming with.

I know we have at least 3 trailers (Leg VI, Leg XI, and Lawrens and maybe Leg XIV) anyone else?

Photos will be up in a few hours (8-13-08 at 5pm EST, so figure 8pm EST.)

I did get the site pics and hotel pics up, also maps and a site plan.

Discovery Place is enormous... Bring your kids, they will LOVE the Kids portion of the Museum. The Pompeii exhibit looks awesome too. There is plenty for the family to do right onsite.

Lunch and dinner will be served in a dedicated room available to us. we will also be able to go in and out of the Museum if folks want to patrol the building, or need to cool down throughout the day. Water and restroooms onsite, and easy load access (max of about 125 feet to carry or move stuff.

It literally is in the backyards of condos and a "blueblood" neighborhood, so we may meet some great city leaders and such. The Posters are awesome looking and keep getting stolen from the elevators... and one had a moustache... Sorry Don...

Plenty of good food in walking distance. Hotel is very nice and is six short blocks away... more like 3-4 NYC blocks. Easy access to area from I-77 too.

Looking forward to it, Rusty.

So far, it looks like 4 cars and one trailer for Legio XI. 6 milites.

I may have more, but that would presume that guys would answer when I ask if they are planning to attend! As you know, this is a lot like herding cats.
