Roman triple crested helmets
#16
Antoninus,
Yes, the side buckles are on each side of the ridge and close to it. Therefore, there is no much doubt about their relationship with the crest.
I forgot to mention that the ridge is flat but it has some small glasspaste 'stones' inserted on it.
It\'s all an accident, an accident of hands. Mine, others, all without mind, from one extreme to another, but neither works nor will ever.

<As far as I can see, the Chesters sculpture does not look anything like the Theilenhofen helmet. What does everyone else think?>
Given the fragmentary nature of the sculpture, when I looked at it, I'm not sure that it is possible to distinguish definitively what sort of helmet it is other than triple-crested, with organic plumes. The Theilenhofen helmet is certainly a possibility-also the right period- and certainly, the description above would look magnificent. However, unless the rest of the sculpture comes to light, we may never know conclusively. However, it is possible to conclude that the standard bearer of the Asturian cavalry in his triple plumed and crested helmet looked very different from the standard "Osprey" style representation!

Which Osprey style representation did you have in mind?

I have asked Rich to post on this message images of my Theilenhofen, nearly as the original may have looked in all its splendor. Actual crests of horsehair or feathers were most certainly intended for this helmet. The back of the eagle and the cones at the back were pierced for ties to secure the crest boxes. So far, I have only placed the crest on the central ridge. I will add the others one of these days.
For those of you (like me) who couldn't get into Paulus's Yahoo site, here's a muddy picture of the Chesters helmet.
The triple crest is quite distinctive and unlike any helmet I have ever seen.

<Which Osprey style representation did you have in mind?> Just the standard depiction of Romans in their Augustan era helmets, rather than the gaudier ones I suspect were actually worn.

Dan- that helmet is quite, quite magnificent. Please could you post pics from several angles when the other crests are on?

Overall, I think we have underestimated the psychological impact of a crested or masked helmet in war- based on a current ancmed thread, modern analysis shows that very few soldiers actually even fire their weapons, but melt away before the battle. And if I were a Teuton barbarian, I would too!
it is a pity, but "he" (wonderful, hibernicus )can't post anything in this forum for a far too long time, because "he" has been banned for a half year by the staff team. Look several topics in the Off Topic.
Rather wonderfully, Dan's magnificent Thelenhofen repro crest is somewhat reminiscent of Russell Crowe's helmet- except Hollywood (this time) have been far too restrained in the helmet decoration

"Dan can't post anything in this forum for a far too long time, because he has been banned for a half year " I obviously went on holiday to Italy and missed the battle...I'll miss Dan's postings. Look forward to when he returns from his exile (To the Black Sea with Ovid?)

Vincula- thanks for posting the Chesters helmet (my poor grasp of technology again). The closest approximation I can come up with is an Attic helmet with a triple crest- but the sculpture is simply too small and too damaged to do much more than guess, I think.

Cheers,
Notice that the Chesters helmet brow points downward. Russel Crowe's points upward.
(But then, who's looking at his helmet?! )

While we're on unusual helmets, someone posted a link some time ago that took you to an imagebase or roman military sculptures --not Jasper's imagebase, another.
There was a stone there. If I remember well it was a text of some sort, flanked on both sides by helmets. The interesting thing about those helmets is that they were of the pseudo-corinthian, or etrusco-corinthian type. The sculpture was from 1st/2nd C.AD.
On the left side of the text was a pretty good representation of a piece whose single specimen was found at Autun (France). It's the helmet with the neck guard made of three strips of metal mounted on leathers and the triple laurel crown.
On the right side was another etrusco-corinthian, without the three strip construction on the neck guard, but with the sides of the helmet rolled up above the cheek guards. It looked like a Twinkie..
Naturally, I forgot to bookmark the darn thing, so, after seeking the said darn thing for ages, I am down to begging info as to the whereabouts of that link.
That is, if someone remembers..
