Tinning

Yeah, but that was in reference to the fondu parties they were having at the time.

Does anyone have the specific reference to hot dipping from Pliny? I believe it's in his "Histories".

A question here. I melt aluminium in my yard. However, I am going to try to make bronze. Where can you find cheap or free tin? I have solder, but It has lead.

I will try with the Oately now, lets see if I get more lucky Cry

Daniel, it might be a big problem for them to ship it. Did you specify it was to be 100% tin with no lead content? IIRC they also have a policy about international shipping due to it possibly being a hazardous material and the paperwork involved.

Plain old vinegar works fine to degrease and prep cupric metals for whatever is next. I should think a quick rinse with bottled water and a wipe with a clean cloth would be good, just before the adding of the tinning compound.

I wish I had even gotten that far in the exchange. I was basically outright ignored. Its not like I want that stuff shipped to Bagdad. And yes, after asking about this stuff several times here on the board I went stright for the no lead version.
I have found a Spanish distributor of the Oatley brand, less headaches that way I hope.

Tarbicus is right - Neale's cannot send the tinning paste overseas (by air or sea) because it is considered hazardous. I tried to order some and that is the answer I got.

I can't see how it could be hazardous, but rules are rules, I guess.

Because tradtionally solder paste has lead in it, and therefore the stuff is regarded as hazardous material. Of course they could point out that this particular pot (and it's only quite small) has no lead, but it needs stacks of paperwork for Customs, et al, to believe that.

We're a tiny minority market, and the authorities and Health and Safety cater towards the mean.

Apparently it is the flux in the paste that is the hazardous component.
