Dura-Europos "arming cap"
#1
I like to make a reconstruction from the Dura "arming cap". Have anybody measurements from it :?: I know there is a copy in Pfister & Bellinger, The excavations at Dura-Europos; Final Report; 4,2,1945; The Textiles (p 58, No 289, Fig. 8, Pl. XXVIII)
Thanks for your help Big Grin

I did this a while back. You'd need to adjust the measurements for your own head.

Excavations at Dura-Europos, Final Report VII, Simon James, 2004 page 108 - 109 gives two photographs, one with a metric scale. I can scan, and send if you want. Dementions seem to be 25cm. x 35cm. width to length in the preserved areas. However, given that textiles can distort with age and conditions of preservation, even in arid climates, this, and any modern measrement may be an inacurate reflection of the original item to some degree.

James quotes Pfister and Bellinger in part noting that the ear tabs fold inward sewn with pile attached "in loops 2 cm long and 1.4 cm. apart." I am not clear on the meaning. The outer layer was woven in one piece. A felt lining of dyed wool was was sewn in with undyed thread in a /\\/\\/\\ pattern. The top has a crush consistant with a helmet bowl.

The cap was found near the Plamyrene Gate. It is not certain that is is a helmet liner as it was not found in a helmet, but...
