A soldier of Dura-Europos
#1
I am working on the equipment of a soldier from Dura-Europos which I will present at the Ancient Rome and Greece Weekend at the Royal Ontario Museum. I'll be doing a series of blogs on the process (http://www.rom.on.ca/en/blog/re-enactmen...nd-i-of-iv), and I would really appreciate the feedback of this group when I post about the sword, dagger, and tunic next week.

Thanks!

Excellent! Good luck Robert, I'm really looking forward to seeing your impression. Of course Simon James' colour plates are the perfect basis upon which to build one. I highly highly recommend Holger Ratsdorff in Germany and Nodge Nolan, through Armamentaria in the UK for bronze fittings. I just recieved a beautiful openwork baldric fitting and phalera from Holger today.

Although I have a set of third century equipment, I am currently replacing it all to a higher standard ready to illustrate a book I am writing on the third century. Hence my interest in your project!

Thanks for your support. I have indeed acquired a lot of material from Armamentaria (boots, belt and baldric fittings, etc) and will mention them in my final blog in this series.

Here is the second one, which may be of more interest since it actually talks about an object I've had created: http://www.rom.on.ca/en/blog/re-enactmen...-the-sword

I'm very glad you like the sword! It is not a very adventurous reconstruction, the parts are pretty much all there. The knife or dagger, however, is more hypothetical. I'd appreciate your comments: http://www.rom.on.ca/en/blog/re-enactmen...the-dagger

Fine looking bits of kit - well done sir :-)
I too am very slowly building a late 3rd century impression based on Carausis's navy.
Your work is an inspiration.

Excellent Robert! The dagger / knife presented might very well suit for my 4th c. CE impression, very interesting!

Impressive reconstruction. I like the dagger in particular - I've never seen anything like that before!

Thanks for this, Martin. I have been lurking on this list-server for a while to my advantage, but I missed this post. The paper about the Budapest find that is the primary basis of the hypothetical reconstruction is attached. I also considered a ring-pommel, based on ones I had seen in London, but I was not sure of the dating of them (the Dorchester belt find came with a ring-pommel knife, for instance).

Robert,

I want to congratulate you on your impression, you look great! I enjoyed reading your blog very much and thought it was interesting your experiments with the tunica. I had a question about the plate on your dagger sheath, did Tod cast it or cut it out? Its beautiful work! I am working on putting together an impression from Dura myself, so it was great to see what a fellow traveler was doing.

Best,

Lucianus

I forgot to ask, how thick is the pierced plate on the dagger sheath, from the photos it looked like it was about 18ga, is that correct or is it a bit thicker. Its often hard to tell from a photo.

Thanks,
