painted armour
#1
I wonder how prevalent was the practice of palnting armour particularly in the late roman period. I am thinking about helmets, greaves and such lilke. I seem to remember seeing photographs on this site from various events on the continent. Anyone any thoughts? It was common practice at other periods, both looking good and having a practical purpose re rust etc.
Any photos or other representations?

thank you. Have just read the thread. Bottom line seems to be nobody knows for sure but seems likely. One wonders how ornate they got I am talking only about painting my helmet black specifically as a rust inhibitor.
once again appreciate your help.

Hmm, I think that's a bit too much given they burnished their armour.

Just cover your helm in silver plate. It does the trick!
