.....good thought - I have an older SLR with tripod, and access to a digital camera ( my wife's!)....so that could be worth a thought - I was thinking of taking them to a high street 'image' shop to see if they had a larger photocopier sized scanner (mine doesn't handle much more than A4).....

Paul, I sure hope we can see those pictures.

That said, Tony you mentioned something I forgot to ask. On a lot of the metopes, the swords appear to have more of a Fulham/Mainz shape to them then say a Pompeii shape. I am not sure if the actual appearance is as intended or if it is just the best way the artist could portray the appearance of the weapon while working with stone.

Thoughts?

O.K. -here's a test image - alot has been lost in the process, quality etc but hopefully it is better than nothing......

I picked this metope for Tarbicus/Jim as a test because it as close as the Tropaeum gets to showing segmentata.......

I need some help and feedback, please, everyone.
I've solved the scanning problem, but the images are way too big in both kilobytes and pixels to fit the site - so I spent a good half-hour 'fiddling' to crop and re-size using Microsoft Photo Editor.(mostly trial-and-error trying to figure out how to use the damned thing - I have Vista, and you can't get help on what to do!!) :evil: :twisted: Clearly I don't want to do this some 50 odd times, so does someone know a better way to do this?? Thumbnails? ( but quality problems?)

Paul. Use Easy thumbnails, set it to, say, 650*650 and select all photos. Crash, boom, done.

Arklore I would say they were at least the soldiers that posed might have been wearing them, the detail of the rest of the uniform has archeological evidence. Also they have tried to show embossed scabbard plate, if it had been a Pompeii I would have expected just cross bands. As you say it makes you ponder :? hmmmm
Pavllvs if you have a photobucket or other you can automaticaly resize it,no fiddling with the pic D

Since I need to learn how to use 'Easy Thumbnails' ( I've only used it once before to post my 'roman house' photos), I'll try that first as Plan A.

If I run into problems then I shall take up Robert's very kind offer as Plan B. 8)

Hopefully we can get them up soon.....perhaps they should be added to the Roman Army database?

I'm a true believer in Irfan View. Free download (but Mr. Irfan will accept donations) www.irfanview.com When you have the program running, click "Image" then "resize/resample" and tell it how big you want. Save the resulting file with a new name in whatever folder you like, and you're done. EZ.
