Paul, I'll send you a PM at the weekend if you don't mind waiting. There's no hurry, and there are ways to pass around large files at no expense.

Detail is the important thing here, and if it's rushed using 8-bit images then the detail will be lost.

Irfan View, etc, are crap for this. Can we please do this properly.

8-bit imagery is likely ok, besides that most image readers will not display anything but 8-bit, the key is how you compress the imagery. For line art (that is what we're talking about, right?) GIF is often superior to JPG, higher compression ratio yet details are preserved. If you're really anal, for grey-scale you could consider 16-bit TIF, but be aware that to display the image on your monitor you most likely are going to get the image converted to 8-bits.

O.K. Jim - I'd agree with you that we would like to get the best quality possible - which will be frustratingly low because the metopes themselves are badly eroded, my images, as I mentioned, are old and somewhat faded, and I only have them scanned as J-pegs.

Anything that will prevent any further deterioration in quality will be good.........look forward to yr P.M. - which will need to be detailed instructions for reasons aforesaid.

Folks,

would it be an idea worth considering to have a Adamklissi Image Data base here on RAT if the parties owning the images were agreeable to letting them be posted here?

Thoughts?

The images are absolutely stunning, to include the one black and white one Paul that many of us have never seen.

What I find interesting is how often caligae are shown on the soldier's feet and not calcei...perhaps 105 AD the caligae was still the more popular choice in footwear?

....a quick riffle through the metopes shows caligae to be pretty much universal, as they are on T's column......
