I don't know if it's just me but I get the impression that the pic' shows a Ring on the top of the bowl or can it be something in the background.

Looks to be a crest mount with a tuft of crest.

What is strange and of interest is the date of this picture which would remove it way out for a Coolus hard realy to say just what helmet is it.

yes, byzantine harness 'varangian bra' and other kit look right for 6th C. but the helmet seems to be old fashioned.
