Coolus reconstruction - LUCIUS ALFENUS AVITIANUS - 01-04-2008 Hello! I'm working in a new Coolus type helmet for my group. I have used the Robinson drawings and pictures. I have found that there are a lot of helmets without original cheekpieces preserved in place. I have made a coolus "dome" wit the hinge positioned very rear, near the begining of the neckguard. If I put a cheekpiece reconstructed, the efect is that there is a lot of face without protection, very diferent to the usual reconstruction. What do you think about? Re: Coolus reconstruction - LUCIUS ALFENUS AVITIANUS - 01-04-2008 Here there are! Happy New Year, Comerus (and the rest of people, of course....) Re: Coolus reconstruction - MARCvSVIBIvSMAvRINvS - 01-04-2008 nice!!! a bit thick in bronze maybe, but very nice!!!! M.VIB.M. Re: Coolus reconstruction - Magnus - 01-04-2008 Excellent work Cesar! I think you'll be fine with whatever cheek piece you decide to go with. Re: Coolus reconstruction - LUCIUS ALFENUS AVITIANUS - 01-04-2008 Well, is not finished, but with the actual cheekpieces is like that: The cheekpieces are a kind of compromise between some models. Re: Coolus reconstruction - LUCIUS ALFENUS AVITIANUS - 01-04-2008 Oh, i forgot it! He's my brother Andrés. Not re-enactor, by the moment... Re: Coolus reconstruction - Marcus Mummius - 01-04-2008 Indeed the original Coolus models are like that. Not much face protection. The helmet looks fantastic! If you're not happy with it, you can send it to me !!!!! Re: Coolus reconstruction - Peroni - 01-05-2008 I really like it Cesar! Great work! Quote:nice!!! a bit thick in bronze maybe, but very nice!!!! The Walbrook Coolus E in the British Museum has a neck guard thickness of about the same gauge Cesar, 3mm isn't unknown. http://www.romanarmy.com/cms/component/ ... Itemid,96/ Re: Coolus reconstruction - FAVENTIANVS - 01-05-2008 I like it! Re: Coolus reconstruction - Robbie Phillips - 01-05-2008 Wonderful job on the helmet!!!! My question to you is , how did you reproduced the bowl? I would like try to make my own bowl but have not had any luck on finding anyone that can spin metal bowls. Perhaps beating the bowl into shape? Re: Coolus reconstruction - Gaius Julius Caesar - 01-05-2008 Excellent work Cesar! Definately deserving a laude!! Just out of curiousity, where did you source the bronze, I am findinf it difficult to find any locally at a reasonable price!! bronze, and technique - richsc - 01-05-2008 It looks like 14 gauge? Is it spun? The price of bronze has doubled over here in the last year. Re: Coolus reconstruction - LUCIUS ALFENUS AVITIANUS - 01-05-2008 The dome is buy in germany. It's no spininng, it's not round, it's oval. The point for the plume it's made in a lathe. The checkpieces are brass, so are a little more yellowish. The neckguard it's 3 mm, but the rest of the helmet it's less (1,5-2 mm). And, yes, the inspiration for the neckguard it's the London helmet, but with another cheekpieces and without the feather supports. Peroni, do you think the neckguard it's a little long? Now i have to take of some rough surfaces, and probably polish a little. Re: Coolus reconstruction - Gaius - 01-05-2008 Impressive work César, I like it very much... Re: Coolus reconstruction - LUCIUS ALFENUS AVITIANUS - 01-05-2008 The german maker is http://www.rudis-kuenstlerwerkstatt.de/ ... -helme.htm I have used that: But they have almost finished coolus helmets, too. |
