Patterns for european size 43 caligae?

I would like to ask if someone here on this forum has full size patterns for roman, circa 140 A.D caligae of european size 43?

However, there is no "140AD caligae pattern" as caligae were not used by then. For 2nd century you want calcei, a closed boot.

You need to tailor whatever pattern that you find to your particular feet. The "duct tape over an old sock" method is one way to make the required adjustments. Put on an old sock, cover your foot with celaphane, and wrap with duck tape. Draw the pattern on the duck tape and carefully cut the tape away from your foot and lay flat.

You may also want to start by enlarging an existing pattern to match the length of your largest foot and then adjust the pattern using the duck tape method.

So, do you really want caligae, 1st century, or calcei, 2nd century?

If the calcei are more accurate, I would want them, they're probably easier to make too. does anuone have patterns? And how thick the leather should be?

I'd say no, if anything, more experience is necessary to make calcei. You want a low type, like this one. Look for Antonine finds.

Martin, I have heard that you are an expert on the roman footwear, so I'd like to ask some questions:

How thick leather should you use for a calcei or caligae?

Which ones(calcei or caligae) should I make, because I have got a Newstead segmentata coming up and I need accurate shoes?

Do you have patterns for these?

Where could I acquire good hobnails?

You will need to make your own pattern. He shows how to do this.

Matt Lukes is taking orders for accurate hobnails. I do not know when these will be available though. Cast hobnails that are almost as good are available from Le Prevo:

For caligae, I have started using 8-9oz leather for the uppers, 14oz bends for the out-sole, and 7-8oz leather for the in-sole.
