Why no Egyptian Reenactment groups?

I think the main problem is that reenactent is still a very male-dominated, macho and militaristic hobby.

To my knowledge, that seems to be the case with mainly Roman reenactment. The medieval/renaissance SCA (Society for Creative Anachronism), has tons of women as members, and a good amount of them can become knights and participate in melees and stuff, but I don't see that in Roman reenactments. I wonder if it's because women aren't allowed (because it wouldn't be historically accurate), or not enough women are interested in that type of thing?

I know I've seen one at a 'Celtic' event in Germany. I'll dig around a bit, not sure if he was on his own or part of a group.

our Roman group has some very prominent females.....
but there is one roup I can think of that is a bit that way....
Visne partem mei capere? Comminus agamus! * Me semper rogo, Quid faceret Iulius Caesar? * Confidence is a good thing! Overconfidence is too much of a good thing.

So they are soldiers then? Or do you mean prominent civilians?
:?:

Though I suppose it wouldn't help me much since I'm Canada. The closest group I found on the net was still too far for me to easily get to. Sad

Hey, civilians, obviously Confusedhock:

We try to keep it real....No Amazons in the Legions AFAIK

But I do have a thing for the babe who played Cleo in ROME, and am partial to the odd Goth girl or 2 8)

It would be cool to have a wider representation of the era.....our group is working on an erlier period, and I am putting a Caesarian impression together, so if her highness needs a roman military escort, I would be more than willing to perform the duty..... Big Grin

You could always move over here and stay at my place, I recently bought a tent!!
Then I could take you to our events as 'talented captured artisan woman', or something..... 8)

Sorry, just my warped sense of humour...Sorry to hear there are so few groups around your area Sharon, as your skills would be a great boost!

 But that's exactly what I mean -- women are allowed to become soldiers and knights in the SCA, but not in roman reenactment groups!!

But I do see where you're coming from -- a part of me cringes at how historically inaccurate it is, and yet bemoaning how unfair it seems, coming from a woman's point of view I mean. Ok I concede, I guess it would look weird for a 5"1 woman to be marching in formation with a bunch of big men. Sad

... maybe I can pretend to be a boy! ... no, scrap that, I don't think I could hide everything.

Better yet, maybe I'll just start my own Amazon Legion!

Cheeky monkey. Tongue

Haha, I did always want to move to England since I was a kid, but I refuse to be a slave!

hi Matt. I'm east of Toronto in Bowmanville (gawd, I hate this town). Where is your group located?

Well, i'm living in Welland which is about 2.5 hours away, but I have some members in Toronto and Hamilton. I'm working on an itinerary of events, I can send you that if you'd like. I can also add you to my group's email list, just so you can see what we're up to. Send me your email if you'd like in a pm and I'll add you if you want.

That sound great! Hamilton is a bit far for me (no car), but I may be able to go a Toronto event in future. For now, if I could just be on the mailing list so I know what's going on, that would be awesome. Will send a PM.
What roman era does your group portray?

.. To get back to the Egyptian topic, if anyone is ever in Chicago, you must visit the Field Museum! They have a huge area devoted to ancient Egypt, and even a replica tomb you can walk through. Very fascinating. Even though I've seen it a million times, I never get tired of that exhibit! Big Grin

Matt, if you sent an email, I didn't receive it. Could you please re-send it? hmm, I'm pretty sure I sent the right email addy ...

And thanks for the link to the group! I loved all the information regarding armour, even if i can't really take part in that aspect. I'm currently looking through the photos to get some idea of civilian clothing. Smile
