YAIKES!!!!!!!!!! to the toledo one and the site from italy.....
so... if the rings were portrayed so many times...
wouldnt that give to think there might at least be a shred of evidence they existed?

I don't see why, especially if the explanation were for sculptural decorative purposes, not actual military. The Toledo helm is a fake, and the Montefortino posted above has been doctored with horse furniture. There's no evidence of top rings on Roman helmets
AFAIK PRIOR TO THE GUTTMANN NIEDERMORMTER.
Bear in mind that almost every helmet on the columns has a ring, but none of the ones on the Adamklissi Monument which clearly shows soldiers compatible with the archaeological record.

Ah, true. Having built a 3D version I should have remembered that one. But was that used in the Dacian Wars?

Rather like the plume I have on my avatar- until a helpful Batavian suggested that I tie a separate (black) leather thong to the body of the plume and the plume holder. You might have the same issue with your Italic D plume?
Cheers

I've jammed magpie feathers into the front, which should help stop it from swinging forwards. But thanks for the tip.
Of course, the ring could be to tie the helmet to a saddle when it's not in use.....
