Quote:Fine avatar you have! Big Grin

Vale,

I'll assume you were talking to me, since I happen to be displaying one of the greatest men who ever lived on my avatar. 8)

Thanks!

Mu-haha! Long live the (classical) Greeks!

I meant Iulianus, but of course you can call him Iulianos as well... 8)

Quote:To make the thing even more confusing:

Gaius Flavius Iulius Constantius called Chlorus is father of

Gaius Flavius Valerius Constantinus known as Constantin the Great (for whatever reason)

he was succeeded by his sons
Flavius Claudius Constantinus
Flavius Julius Constans
Flavius Iulius Constantius

and then to make it even more confusing
Flavius Julius Constantius is the halfbrother of Constantin the Great and father of the emperor
Flavius Claudius Iulianus

what a creative family Wink

It may be confusing to us moderns but it actually represents an improvement / evolution of the name system the Romans traditionally used which was even MORE confusing. For example the old system only distinguished father from son of the same name as"Cato the Elder" and "Cato the Younger." That's fine, but what about grandsons ? When this practice continues for several generations you can see what great confusion it generates ! Confusedhock: Smile

By the late Empire, the Romans finally started to differentiate their old names.

BTW, great photos ! I didn't know the Arch of Constantine was gated off like that. Good precaution against vandals, I suppose (no pun intended). I'm more worried about protecting it from the elements, though.

Its my understanding that the gating around Constantine's Arch is somewhat new, or that its been expanded quite a bit. I think it used to be more like the Arch of Titus, where you can get right up next to it almost.

And, the reliefs and sculpture in general on the Arch of Constantine are still quite clear, so errosion isn't taking too much of a toll as of yet.

And the protection against vandals is always a need in Rome. On the last day I was there I saw where somebody had took a can of spraypaint to the exterior of the church with the Sancta Sactorum, (I think thats what its called), the one right next to St John Lateran. Some sort of anti-Vatican message in italian . . I was angry. Made me want to stick my foot (or any available gladius or pugio) up some Italian punk's nether regions.

That's good to know. I hope all the other monuments fare just as well.

Thanks, Marshal Smile

:x Are you sure he was a real Italian ? Maybe he was a Turk or some North African. The penalty should be to have his hand amputated, imo. That'll teach him!
