My Pictures from Rome, Nov 06
#1
So I just got back from Rome last Saturday night, my university funded a trip for an upper division history class. It was a blast, and I thought I'd share the pictures with all you folks. These are the military themed pictures.

Me and the Arch of Constantius
The late, great J.C.
His Plaque
J.C. junior
Headless Commander
Copy of Reliefs from the Arch of Titus
Arch of Titus Reliefs copy
Arch of Septimius Severus

I didn't take all that many pictures, but these arent all, I' got stuck on the uploading, and I"ll add some more later.

Arch of Titus
Marcus Aurelius
This last one is what appears to be a copy of a relief of Marcus Aurelius triumphing. It was hanging on a wall in the Capitoline Museum. The chariot and the garb look to be right, and I notice he has victory holding the crown over his head instead of a slave.

Another Arch of Constantius This thing is huge.
A bust of Scipio Africanus Wow, now we know why he could beat Hannibal .. . he looks mean.
The "Dying Gaul"
Castle San Angelo Why not? Its military, its "Roman", and its cool

Us on the Palatine Thats the men in my class on the Palatine Hill . . . at this point, it had been a long day. I'm on the back left, by the way.

By chance did you took pictures of Bust in Capitoline M. or other?

Remarks by Philip on the Athenian Leaders:
Philip said that the Athenians were like the bust of Hermes: all mouth and dick.

Hmm.....I'm not sure if i like that comparison . . . Smile

I don't think I did, but I'm fairly sure that guy sitting next to me in the picture did. I'll ask him. There were a lot of things I thought I had pictures of from my previous trip that I really didn't, so I didn't take nearly as many pictures as I should have.

Great pics! I am really jealous! :x x lol:

Was hoping to get there this year, but work was too sporadic!

Cheers Jasper! Thought so, but am feeling a bit unsure of my knowledge in the midst of so many people who are better educated!

Isn't that the Arch of Constantine (the Great), not Constantius?

Constantine = Anglicized version of the name "Constantius", unless I'm mistaken.

And Jeroen, I went to St Peter's almost daily, our hotel was only a block or two away from it, and really like St Peters, besides St John Lateran its my favorite church.

This is Augustus's masoleum, its what Hadrians would have looked like if it hadn't been turned into a castle.[url:2igke5vi]http://i132.photobucket.com/albums/q8/molonlaber/100_0498.jpg[/url]

Errr, nope.
Constantine = Constantine the Great = Flavius Valerius Constantinus (306-337)
Constantius = Flavius Valerius Constantius I (293-306) or Flavius Julius Constantius II (337-361).
Then there's a Constans too, very confusing.

Quote:Constantine = Anglicized version of the name "Constantius", unless I'm mistaken.

Constantine the Great = Constantinus

Constantius was somebody else (his father (Constantius Chlorus and another emperor (Constantius II)

To add to the confusion, we also have a Constans (youngest son of Constantine the Great) and Constantina (eldest daughter of Constantine the Great).

:?

EDIT: damn... beaten by Jasper....

Ops, I had always assumed "Constantine" to be an Anglicized version of the name "Constantius", like Livy and Livius, and a ton of other names that I don't want to say now for fear of being wrong again.

To add to the confusion, we also have a Constans (youngest son of Constantine the Great) and Constantina (eldest daughter of Constantine the Great).

To make the thing even more confusing:

Gaius Flavius Iulius Constantius called Chlorus is father of

Gaius Flavius Valerius Constantinus known as Constantin the Great (for whatever reason)

he was succeeded by his sons
Flavius Claudius Constantinus
Flavius Julius Constans
Flavius Iulius Constantius

and then to make it even more confusing
Flavius Julius Constantius is the halfbrother of Constantin the Great and father of the emperor
Flavius Claudius Iulianus

what a creative family Wink
