The Groningen spiky helmet text in German
#16
hi

here: http://photofile.name/users/nieczar/ ....You can find "Groningen story"

one parts of pictures I took by my self and a part with help of someone....there're pictures of only most important (by me) processes of making

there's not to much done because it was just one-day event ....and I can do this only on events - normaly I make only orders by modern ways Big Grin ....naxt part of "Groningen story" soon

I used plates of the steel DC1 and 1,5mm of thick ...more than in oryginal ...but much better for Reenacting Smile )

all tools are made by archeological sources ....exept wooden block leather matrix (pic 1) an instrument for shape control (pic 8 ) ...it's my invention ,but I think in the Past they could use some similar tool ...maybe made in wood , hardened leather or other material - it's nesesery (in my opinion) for good shape control (similar to sculptoring in the clay or pottery craftman) - but it's only my opinin

I'm not sure is everything I made right ...but there's no "Rules book" of early medieval or ancient armorer ....all what we have it's archeology ....just many of teories - so this is my Smile

What do we know about the dating of this helmet?
I see certain parallels to

The top bronze helmet looks to me like a celtic example .
Where was it found and in wich context.
The bottom one I don't know, from which helmet is it replicated after.

Sure they have some common features whit the Groningen helmet, but there could be a 1000 years difference.

Patryk
What's the progress on the Groningen helmet?
Do you make it also Combat ready, 2.5mm thick or just display.

hello

there're new photos of "Groningen Story" in my Photofile
http://photofile.name/users/nieczar/

I must just to make the rest of the holes - for this I rivated the bowl of the helmet by copper rivets ....in my opinion it's nessesery for finished all shape and to find the places for all rivets - today we use for this steel screws ...copper is ver soft and there's no problem remove the rivets for exemple by the file
...I'm not sure it's historical way ...but it works very good Smile

I think the Groningen helm belongs with spangenhelms . especially of the broad.plate types like later vendel and the coppergate and peterborough helmets in UK. The date 8-10cen cen is not wild but was anything found with it ?

hej Patryk - we met in Trelleborg and other places i think (we discussed jazz music with tomasz Smile )- your face helmets are fantastic. Want to make another groningen helm ?

Hi Plasticleigonary,
Not sure where you get 8th to 10 century for the Groningen from. The date given in the find report is 5th to 7th and that has been recently confirmed. Only one publication that I know of has ever given a later date and that was a museum catalogue, referencing a travelling exhibition called, 'Kings of the North Sea'.
You are right it is a spangen helm of the broad band type.

Looking out for this book, unfortunately written in German language.
But the are very good roll prints ( Blue Prints) of the helmet in it.
Time is late Roman and Dark Age!

Sascha,
It is an exceedingly good book -- I bought a copy when it came out. The Groningen is not featured in it but Mahand Vogt went to the Groningen muesum last year (2007) where she met Professor Egge Knol, who is responsible for the helmet.
