There's a VERY good page compiled by Yale: http://guides.library.yale.edu/classics-abbreviations
From my own experience:
Ancient Sources
In general, your best bet is the abbreviations list in the Oxford Classical Dictionary (only available online to subscribers, but if you're doing a university thesis there will be a copy in your library). Lewis and Short (http://latinlexicon.org/LNS_abbreviations.php) as well as other major classical dictionaries also have good abbreviations guides.
Modern Journals and publications
American Journal of Archaeology: http://www.ajaonline.org/submissions/abbreviations
L'Année Philologique: http://www.lib.berkeley.edu/ARTH/lannee.html or http://www.anphil.org/contenus/liste-per...depouilles
'Modern' works in 19th and early 20th century publications (i.e. a 1930s journal which references an 1890s journal).
Dictionary of bibliographic abbreviations found in the scholarship of classical studies and related disciplines by Jean Susorney Wellington is a godsend (your librarian can help you here).
If you want some more reading on praefecti castrorum, then PM me/post a separate thread
