The oldest Roman castrum near Trieste
#1
I don't know if this has appeared on RAT yet … the news is from National Geographic (Italy) dated January 22, 2013.

On Monte Grociana, few kilometers from Trieste (northeastern Italy), a team of Italian researchers have found the ‘oldest’ roman castrum (more ancient than Hermeskeil).
The camp has been identified thanks to the LiDAR (light detection and raging) technology, and an archaeological survey have confirmed the Roman origin of the structure. The ceramic fragments found belong to a type of amphora dated between the end of the second century BC and the beginning of first century BC. The fragments were also subjected to an X-ray microtomography.
The camp can be related to Livy Ab Urbe Condita, when during the first phase of the third war against the Histri the Roman fleet would move from Lacus Timavi, in front of Monfalcone, to the first port in the Histrian coast. Two consular legions encamped in the inland, about seven kilometers from the ships. Monte Grociana is just 7 km from the old port of Stramare, one of the first harbor in Histria.
