Oldest Roman Camp In Germany found
#1
Archeologists from Mainz say the camp near the Hunnenring at Hermeskeil dates from the Gallic Wars.
In German: http://www.uni-mainz.de/presse/53009.php
They also say its about 26 ha large and in the line of sight of the Hunnenring
a late-La Tene (gallic) fortification.
First dateable finds during the excavation campaign of 2011 were hobnails from one paved gateway, which were typically "late republican". Finds of pottery have confirmed this.
A translation will follow "as sleep permits".

German magazine GEO has a feature about this in it's September issue.
Gonna have that one. (Next on the list would be that one in the Archäologisches Korrespondenzblatt, of course  )

Hi,
.... had GEO September 2012 in hand a couple of hours ago. Confusedad:
This "feature" is even more "austere" than the official press release of Mainz University. Gotta get that feature in Archeologisches Korespondenzblatt.

I've found the "original" press-release.
The most interesting feats ( the information in the text has been widely distributed by various
press features in Germany (no real news herein).
Like I use to say -- apicture ....
Pic 1 : The distribution of hobnails in realtion to the gate and the trenches in that area:

BTW : the whole kaboodle is there (In German)-- pics and two TV-features down right.

Here's what Past Horizons reports.

I used to go walking around the Hunnenring in Oetzenhausen and the woods nearby when I was stationed in Germany. There are sorts of cool things to be found in the Hunsruck.

"... das über mehrere Wochen oder Monate hinweg genutzt wurde ..." But they had the time and inclination to pave the gateways?! :o

Duncan I have to "sharpen" my statement

I took this from the very early press-notes. But as you see from post #320499 , pic 1, it seems
that rather a trace of hobnails led them to find the gate etc. -- further hobnail included.
I hope that time permit me to get that part of the recent Archäologisches Korrespondenzblatt which
deals more precise with that finding-spot, so I can be more explicit about it.
Was I surprised that they had paved the gateway ??
NO. The old folks used to say "The Roman Legions- paving the way to the Empire!".
Well, it seems they took that literally, here. ;-)
But seriously -- if the troops stayed over winter I'd have expected such measures taken there, give the climate of that area, which can be rough -- as I have experienced there.
(2 years Birkenfeld/Nahe ~ 10 kms away )

Interesting - if it's a winter camp might it (or its general vicinity) be mentioned in Caesar's Commentaries? Can anyone work out which campaign year of the war might have led the army there?

Hello,

I have another question. What are the differences between late republican and imperial (or perhaps middle republican) hobnails? I mean I didn't know that there is such diversity and there are various distinct types of hobnails, so that we can use them for dating of finds...

Greetings,
Alexandr

The link to the Past Horizons report has this (not a lot of information, but some):

"... iron shoe nails once protected the soles of Roman soldiers’ sandals. The pattern of a cross with four studs that can be seen on the underside is largely typical for the time of the late Republic. Their size, with a diameter of up to 2.6 cm, is also characteristic for this period"
