To back up Jim's theory,
The Doncaster (Danvm) shield reconstruction (in the Doncaster museum and art gallery) By P. Buckland, who also wrote the report on the find, also has many nails and metal appliqués on its facing. These were set in lines radiating from the central bronze appliqué and also in lunate patterns.
