Marshal,
Some years ago, in a used book store, I found a pre-publication copy of Gates Of Fire with an intro page indicating that film rights to the book had already been optioned by George Clooney. Now this was before Clooney had become known for his directing & producing so perhaps he was looking at this as an acting vehicle for himself. Or perhaps he was already thinking as a producer.
Nothing has come of this -- yet, and we do not know if Clooney renewed his option or if someone else has picked up the rights.
Perhaps no one has.
When the "creative" team behind Starship Troopers began thinking about doing a SciFi film they joked about doing Heinlein's book, but were certain the film rights were already held by someone. To their surprise no one had ever optioned the book and they did so at once.
Even though we see the potential for a Gates Of Fire film, those in Hollywood with the power or the money to make a film may not.
However...
Someone may indeed have the rights and we will eventually see a film.
I remain optimistic.
