Oh, hadn't heard of that one! For the Republic and early Empire, I don't think anyone has come up with ANY depictions of belt pouches at all, nor any references. There are a couple little pouches of various sorts, but no evidence that they were hung from the belt. Just wasn't a Roman fasion at that time, apparently! Toss it inside your tunic, or hand it to a slave.
Some kinds of shoes are a LOT easier to make than a satchel! A simple pair of carbatinae are open at the top and front, and just laced up, with the only stitching being up the back, so it's pretty easy to get them to fit well enough. But yes, play with PATTERNS first.
