Just to go back to the issue of signa - I've just written a large section on Roman signa of the 3rd and 4th Century for my thesis.

I'm of the opinion that the imperial purple was only introduced onto standards in the 3rd and 4th Century to strengthen the signa as symbols of imperial leadership - if anyone can find an example of purple vexilla or dragon standards pre- mid 3rd century I'd be very interested to know.
