I think you misinterpreted me,guys. In my original post I made it clear that if we equiped the public, no weapons would be present AT ALL. By any part. This would be done to try othismos for example. Is this not possible? If you say so,it isn't.
Then I said that rubber spears should be present for us re-enactors,should we want to try maneuvers. I whole different thing. I didnt even mention battle,with rubber spears or anything. In fact,if we want to charge like a phalanx did,we will certainly injure someone,even with rubber spears. We discussed this problem in a thread in the re-enactment and reconstruction section,a while ago. It was simply desighned in such a way to be devastating. Between reenactors we could perhaps demonstrate a battle,but without charge at all. It would be static,and would serve mostly for the public to see a battle,and for us to see if we can use our spears and maintain our formation while moving and trying to "hit" a target while hiden behind the aspis.
The public...well the participation of the publick is an aspect of some groups' show. They chose one or two persons from the publick,they give them a shield or a weapon(fake ot not) and the tell them "do as if you'd hit me" or "try to push me". Is it unthinkable to pick more volunteers and tell them "ok,now push this phalanx". It isn't all that dangerous. It's worse while entering the cinema! We would only see if the locked shield would stay there or if the formation would break. No weapons at all.We could even place the few re-enactors in the front rank,and the rest below them. Giving them clothes is not essential,but it would be nice. In look and to protect their clothes. Is this restricted?
Mark, "the public does not immediately become a re-enactor purely by putting a pair of Persian pyjamas on!! " and I never said so. But what do you mean by "persian pyjamas"? When i said some re-enactors could volunteerly make some sets,I had in mind REAL clothes. I would make something I wouldn't mind wear myself,afterwards. Persians may have been less armoured(if they were), but they looked great!
What about those re-enactors who come as individuals-like me? What about their insurance?
And Kineas,no i don't think there are companies in Greece who deal with the insurance of re-enactors,since there is no re-enacting in Greece.There must be insurances for different events,but not purely re-enacting.
