I agree with Mike. I also agree with Jim. Anyway, I thought that the purpose of a SUBarmalis was to support the actual armor, and provide padding at crucial contact points (trapezius, clavicle, shoulder socket) for the secondary protection and padding of the armor. Maybe I've missed something in these zillion words, and that would surprise nobody.
From my own experience, and some other areas of observation, leather has better abrasion resistance to metal friction than linen. Once the threads in the cloth weave begin to abrade and fray, the strength of the fabric decreases more quickly than scuffed leather. I suppose someone could set up a test.
Comfort, function, and evidence (or lack of it) are not really conclusive, as far as I can see. Primarily because it's hot here in Texas, my subarmalis is cloth. But that's just me. I don't mind if other people wear a leather one. Both have their respective virtues, imho. I won't argue for exclusion of either one.
